There are three distinct areas of the film industry, production, distribution and exhibition can be viewed as a type of media institution. These are three different stages in a film process;
Production- which is the creation of the film, what i think of when i hear this term is the production means the planning and filming of the film.
Distribution- A distributor refers to a market of the film, its known as the final agent between the film production company (makers of the film) and a film exhibitor(example cinema) basically selling the production to the exhibitor, distribution finds ways to sell and persuade the exhibitor to buy/rent the film also persuade them that they will make profits money out of the film.
Exhibition- is how the production and the distributor and the exhibitor makes money. Exhibition is defined as a presentation of a product. for example a exhibition in an art museum sells the product, in the film industry terms the film is being exhibited by selling itself in cinemas.
These are the three stages of a film process, the creation, then the distributor sells this product to a exhibitor, persuading them to sell this product in their cinema and so on. If the exhibitor is persuaded the film may sell, through advertisement and all three stages will profit.
